Delicate teardrop earrings and a double strand necklace of freshwater pearls. Both pieces created with antique mother of pearl gaming counters dating circa 1790 during the Ching Dynasty.

Mother of pearl gaming counters were handcrafted by artisans in China from circa 1700 to circa 1840, for use in scoring and bidding in card games in the Western world. The Chinese have long enjoyed the reputation of being some of the worlds most competitive gamblers, so they created these finely carved counters for trade with Great Britain and other European countries. The oyster shells were ground flat, shaped, polished and engraved by hand. The tradition continued until 1840, when the games fell from fashion. These delicately carved Chinese gaming counters have found a new life as the highlight of these beautiful pieces of jewelry.

Mother of pearl earrings are created from an authentic antique game counter and are set in 14Kt gold.

Necklace features 2 strands of pearls and 2 gaming counters linked in 14Kt gold. 34" total length.
